CHAPTER TEN

KATHLEEN SHIVERED AS the night air rushed to meet her when she opened the French doors onto the terrace. It was quiet outside. There was bustle and activity at the lobby entrance but it seemed very far away. From where she was standing even the reflection from the lights on the veranda were nothing more than a scattering of fairy stars on the surface of the lake. The grass beyond the low stone wall bordering the private terrace was dusted with frost, and there was a sharp taste of winter in the air.

She took a deep breath, willing away the claustrophobia that had threatened to choke her in the overcrowded room. The panicky sensations came less and less frequently these days, but once in a while it flooded over her, the fear of being buried alive under tons of concrete and steel, that had plagued her so often in the dark confines of the Triglav hospital basement.

She couldn’t stay away long, the others would notice. It was her wedding party. She should be inside with her family and friends. With her husband.

The sound of music came faintly through the thick log walls and insulated glass. It was an old Elvis song, a love song from the days when the singer was young and handsome, the way her parents and Alyssa and Edward remembered him best. The insurance company had paid off, and the plant was up and running at nearly full capacity again. Alyssa and Judson were even talking of having their annual Christmas party at the plant this year, an open house for all the town to come and celebrate the rebirth of Tyler’s biggest employer. Kathleen liked the idea. She was glad she would be here to see it, and not sitting in some stuffy boardroom in London or Madrid.

The thought brought her up short. Was it only a few short months ago that she would have thought nothing of leaving the country on twenty-four hours notice to dig into the controversy surrounding the Addison Bangkok or one of Edward’s far-flung DEVCHECK properties? She didn’t feel that way anymore.

She wanted to stay home, in Tyler, with her children. A silent prayer came from her heart, directed to the heavens, to the unknown. I do love them already, Rujana, as you knew I would. Thank you for entrusting their care to me.

She looked back through the glass at Andrej and Marta. Dressed
